As temperatures warm up, there may be increased alligator activity around Montgomery County MUD No. 42 (‘Water District”) which includes the subdivisions of Westlake and the Hills of Westlake. The Water District is urging residents to take precautions to prevent dangerous encounters with alligators.

Law enforcement has outlined several key safety guidelines for homeowners and residents. Most importantly, they stress that feeding alligators is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous.

Once fed by people, alligators become less fearful of humans and are more likely to return to populated areas. Residents should stay vigilant, particularly near water sources. It is recommended that children and pets are kept away from water banks to minimize the risk of unexpected encounters. If anyone spots an aggressive or threatening alligator, the immediate advice is to contact local law enforcement.

The primary safety recommendations include:

  • Do not feed alligators under any circumstances.
  • Stay alert when near water.
  • Keep children and pets away from water banks.
  • Call police immediately if an aggressive alligator is observed

As the weather continues to warm, residents are encouraged to remain cautious and prioritize safety when navigating areas with potential alligator presence.
